Successful vintage after challenging year
Spring 2022 was a special one. Drought dominated the weather. From March to June, there was significantly less precipitation than the long-term average. Accordingly, nature took its time. Growth was less „explosive“ than in previous years. Fortunately, older vines can cope well with low rainfall. Their far-reaching roots fetch the water from deep in the soil. But young vines have a hard time with long dry periods. Every shower, every day of rain therefore helped the grapes to recover.
A hot, dry summer followed. This was ideal for our red wine grapes. They were rich in color and aroma. Sunny prospects then also in our cellar: From all our red varieties we were able to press promising red wines, which are now allowed to mature for a while in the barrels.
A white grape variety like Riesling, on the other hand, is better suited to a cooler, waterier river valley like the Saar or Ruwer - we are thrilled with the grapes we were able to harvest there.
After the dry spring and even drier summer, the rain came suddenly and never stopped. We experienced a rainier than average late September. Vigilance, meticulous care and meticulous selection in the vineyard were required here. Our team mastered this challenge magnificently and brought healthy grapes to the wine press houses.
So in the end, despite climatic conditions that were not always easy, there was a happy ending. You can look forward to a vintage that - not least thanks to our hard-working helpers in the vineyard - is a successful one!
