We produce our GROSSEN GEWÄCHSE from our finest plots—the “Große Lagen” of the Saar. Special care and precise selection are essential, as only perfectly ripened, golden-yellow grapes can be used for these wines. Thanks to their richness in mineral extracts and their dense fruitiness, these iconic wines from our finest plots in the most renowned “Große Lagen” are always a true delight. Since these are indeed our finest plots, the wines proudly bear the name as a designation, thus signifying their special origin.
The Ayler Kupp takes its name from the hilltop on which the famous, steep slope—largely facing southwest—is located. This renowned Saar vineyard, which curves like a whale into the river bend near Ayl, produces full-bodied, racy Rieslings with a character all their own. The grapes for the GROSSE GEWÄCHS grow in the central, front section of the Ayler Kupp, which is characterized by its southern exposure and an open, wind-exposed location. We call this area “Im Unterstenberg,” and historical records confirm that it was the first area on this hill where vines were planted.
